Colmar has been on our 'must visit' list for a long time.
- Sue, being a historian, was fascinated to visit the area she has taught about for so many years. (With the rest of Alsace, Colmar was annexed by the newly formed German Empire in 1871 as a result of the Franco-Prussian War and incorporated into the Alsace-Lorraine province. It returned to France after World War I according to the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1940, and then reverted to French control after the battle of the "Colmar Pocket" in 1945.)
- We've heard so much about the beauty, and the history, of the place from our good friend, Jacqui Reithinger, who was born there and whose mother still lives there.
AND if we hadn't just spent a day in Eguisheim I'm sure we would have taken away a different impression of the town, but in the event we are embarrassed to admit that we found ourselves sadly under-whelmed in comparison despite the beautiful buildings.

La Petite Venise: unlike Eguisheim, however, Colmar does have a beautiful canal.
Then it was on to the distant views of the Rhine at Le Haut Koenigsburg, which both the Scallans and Karl Bruder had recommended we visit.
