TADOUSSAC AND THE CHARLEVOIX REGION

Getting there:

As interesting as Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec are, they are all cities and our aim in coming to Canada had been to see a broader cross-section of this vast country in the limited time available. Tadoussac was a town neither of us had ever even heard of, let alone wanted to visit, before we began researching our trip. But it offered the prospect of great geographical beauty, possible whale-watching, as well as a chance to experience far less urbanised settlements, not least as, being very much the end of the season, we were unlikely to be surrounded by holidaymakers or tourists.

Tadoussac

The indigenous Montagnais called the place Totouskak (plural fortotouswk or totochak) meaning "bosom", probably in reference to the two round and sandy hills located on the west side of the village. According to other interpretations, it could also mean "place of lobsters", or "place where the ice is broken" (from the Montagnais shashuko).
